Dental Care
Dental disease is inflammation and infection of the gums and the structures around the teeth, caused by bacteria that build up as plaque and harden into tartar. It is one of the most common conditions we treat in dogs and cats. Does your pet have that familiar “dog breath”? While it may seem normal, bad breath is often a sign of an unhealthy mouth. The odor is caused by bacteria, which can lead to plaque and tartar buildup on your pet’s teeth. Over time, this can progress to dental disease, including red or inflamed gums, persistent bad breath, drooling, discomfort while chewing, and even loose or missing teeth. Treats and dental chews can help, but they are not enough to fully prevent dental disease.
Dental health plays an important role in your pet’s overall wellbeing. Left untreated, dental disease can be associated with more serious conditions affecting the heart, kidneys, and other organs. At Uptown Veterinary Clinic, our team can evaluate your pet’s teeth and gums to assess their dental health and recommend the right care. This may include at-home dental routines or professional cleanings based on your pet’s specific needs.

Your pet’s teeth and gums are checked at every wellness exam, and our team will tell you whether an at-home routine or a professional cleaning is the right next step. A downloadable Home Dental Care guide is also available on our Forms page.
